Create a volume discount

A volume discount takes money off based on the quantity of a product or variant in the cart. You set the quantity that triggers each discount, when it applies with rules, and for how long.

Keep in mind: as the note on the app's Discounts page says, Shopify lets you create up to 5 automatic discounts, covering order, product, volume and shipping discounts.

Create the discount

  1. In the app, go to Discount Function and click Create Discount.

  2. Click Volumn Discount.

The Discounts page of the app, with Discount Function highlighted in the menu, the Create Discount button, and the Create Discount dialog with Volumn Discount highlighted.

  3. Under Internal Name, enter a Title. It's for internal use only: customers don't see it.

The Internal Name card with the Title field and the note Not displayed to customers.

  4. Under Discount Method, choose Automatic discount or Discount code, whichever fits your needs.

Discount Method with the options Automatic discount and Discount code.

Set the discount rules

Each discount rule sets a quantity and the discount it gives.

  1. Under Discount rule, enter the Message customers see.

  2. In Quantity, enter the quantity that triggers the discount.

  3. In Discount Value, enter the amount or percentage of the discount.

  4. In Discount Type, choose Fixed or Percentage.

  5. To add another rule, click Add rule. To delete a rule, click Remove.

The Discount rule card with Rule 1, its Message, Quantity, Discount Value and Discount Type fields, the Remove link and the Add rule button.

Example: with Quantity 1, Discount Value 10 and Discount Type Percentage, customers get 10% off when at least 1 qualifying product is in the cart.

Choose when the discount applies

  1. Under Customization Rules, next to Apply when matching, choose all conditions (every rule must match) or any condition (at least one rule must match).

  2. Choose a rule type in Select Rule type and a condition in Select Rule Condition, then enter the value. Use Add Conditions to add the conditions you need.

  3. To create another rule set, click Add New Rule.

Customization Rules with all conditions and any condition next to Apply when matching, the list of rule types open, and the Add New Rule button.

The rule types are grouped under Cart Details (Total Amount, Subtotal Amount), Cart Has Any Items (SKU, Choose Collection, Choose Product) and Customer (Customer tags, Total Spend). For example, a rule can check that:

  • the cart subtotal is above $50
  • the customer has the tag VIP
  • the cart has a product from the Shoes collection

Set combinations and dates

  1. Under Combinations, tick the discounts this discount can be combined with: Product discounts, Shipping discounts or Order discounts.

Combinations with the Product discounts, Shipping discounts and Order discounts checkboxes.

  2. Under Active dates, enter the Start date and End date.

Active dates with the Start date and End date fields.

  3. Click Save at the bottom right.

The bottom of the discount page with Customization Rules, Combinations, Active dates and the Save button at the bottom right.

Check that it works: go to checkout with a cart that meets your rules. The discount is applied. If you chose Discount code, enter the code first.

If it doesn't work

  • The quantity isn't reached. The discount applies only when the cart holds at least the Quantity of a discount rule.
  • The cart doesn't meet the rules. With all conditions, every rule must match, not just one.
  • The discount isn't active. Check that today falls between the Start date and the End date.
  • Another discount is already applied. If both should apply, tick that kind of discount under Combinations.
