Rename a payment method

To show a payment method under a new name at checkout, create a payment function of the rename type. You can rename or translate it for all customers, or only for customers of a chosen language, country or customer tag.

Create the function

  1. In the app, go to Payment Function and click Create Payment Function.

The Payment Function page of the app, with Payment Function highlighted in the menu and the Create Payment Function button at the top right.

  2. Click Rename payment methods - Tier Based.

The Create Payment Function dialog, with Rename payment methods - Tier Based highlighted.

  3. In Payment Function title, enter a name that helps you find the function later, for example Rename XYZ Payment Method. Customers don't see it.

The Payment Function title field, with the note Not displayed to customers.

Choose how names are matched

  1. Under Payment methods name match, choose Contains, Exact (Case-Sensitive) or Exact (Non Case).

Payment methods name match with the options Contains, Exact (Case-Sensitive) and Exact (Non Case).

  • Contains: the payment method is renamed if any word you enter matches its name. For example, if the payment method is called paypal and you enter payp, it's renamed.
  • Exact (Case-Sensitive): enter the exact name, with the same capital and small letters. For example, if the payment method is called PayPal and you enter paypal, it isn't renamed. Enter PayPal.
  • Exact (Non Case): enter the exact name. Capital and small letters don't matter, so paypal renames PayPal.

Choose who sees the new name

  1. Under Rename payment methods, choose a tier type: Always, Language, Country or Customer tags.

Rename payment methods with the tier type menu open on Always, Language, Country and Customer tags.

  2. Select the payment method to rename in the first field, then enter its new name in the second field.

  3. To rename more payment methods, click Add more.

Rename payment methods with the tier type Always, the payment method 2Checkout renamed to 3Checkout, and the Add more button.

  4. Click Save.

The Share app function logs card and the Save button at the bottom of the page.

The tier types work like this:

  • Always: the payment method is renamed for all customers.
  • Language: it's renamed only when the customer's language matches the language you select.
  • Country: it's renamed only when the customer's country matches the country you select.
  • Customer tags: it's renamed only for customers you've given a specific tag in Shopify.

Check that it works: go to your checkout as a customer the tier type applies to. The payment method shows its new name.

If it doesn't work

  • The name doesn't match. The name you select or enter must match the payment method's name in your store's settings. With Exact (Case-Sensitive), capital and small letters must match too.
  • The tier type doesn't apply to you. With Language, Country or Customer tags, only matching customers see the new name. Test as one of them.
  • The rule still doesn't work on checkout. Share the function's error log with the developer. The Share app function logs card at the bottom of the function's page lists the steps: open the Checkout Engine manage app page from the link in the card, click Share logs in the Share function logs card, then click Share logs in the dialog.

To hide payment methods or change their order instead, see Hide a payment method and Reorder payment methods.
